Phakisa Freeway
The Phakisa Freeway is an international standard, multi-purpose motor sport facility situated in the heart of the Goldfields region of the Free State. Phakisa means “Get Moving” in Sotho. On his first visit to the circuit in late 1999, Alex Barros rated the fast right-hander at the end of the back straight as the best in Grand Prix bike racing! After taking the 500cc crown in the 2001 South African MotoGP, Valentino Rossi said, "I love this place - it is one of the most demanding racetracks in the world, & you have to be brave to win here."

Oppenheimer Park Golf Club
or "Oppies" as it is colloquially known, is situated just outside the town of Welkom in the Free State Province. It is a challenging 18 hole, par 72 parkland golf course, designed by well known South African Golf Course designer, Robert Grimsdell & was opened in 1951.

Winnie Mandela House in Majwemasoeu in Brandfort
Winnie Madikizela Mandela, a social worker and first wife of Nelson Mandela, spent almost a decade living in Brandfort. Winnie Mandela was implicated in the organization of the Soweto Uprising, and upon conviction by the South African courts, spent six months in jail. When she was released on 16 May 1977, The South African government exiled Winnie Mandela to the small town of Brandfort, in the then Orange Free State Province. She was banned from leaving Brandfort for the next eight years, but ever defiant, Winnie Mandela admits to regularly traveling to Johannesburg, and specifically Soweto, the large township on the outskirts of the city.
WINBURG:
Winburg Voortrekker Monument
Winburg acted as a settlement and religious centre for Voortrekkers. Winburg was originally selected as the site for the main Voortrekker Monument, but Pretoria won favour and a five-tiered secondary Voortrekker monument was built on the outskirts of Winburg instead in the 1950s. It carries the names of the Voortrekker leaders: Piet Uys, Andries Hendrik Potgieter, Andries Pretorius, Piet Retief and Gerhard Maritz. On 16 December, the day on which the descendants of the Boer settlers celebrate the Battle of Blood River, the sun passes directly over the monument and a plaque with a Christian religious message at the base is illuminated.
VENTERSBURG:
The Willem Pretorius Game Reserve
The Willem Pretorius Game Reserve is situated in the heart of the Free State with the Allemanskraal Dam (with a surface area of 2 771) forming the central part. The reserve itself covers some 12 005ha. It has a great variety of game and bird species. Among the many game species are the world’s largest herd of black wildebeest, as well as springbok, blesbok, gemsbok, kudu, red hartebeest, eland, zebra, white rhino and giraffe. There are no large predators in the park - caracal and blackbacked jackal are the two largest carnivores in the reserve. There is also a wealth of bird life, with a total of about 220 species.
VIRGINIA:
Virginia Jewellery School
The Virginia Jewellery School is the first of its kind in the Free State & is a development project which aims to teach matriculants from the rural areas, aged at least 18 years, the art of jewellery making. It is a venture sponsored by the Italian government through the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and Harmony. The school has been in operation since November 2000. The goal of the jewellery school is to provide the best training in jewellery making, entrepreneurial skills, management and marketing. It is supported by the government human resources fund, Thrip, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and Eskom, which provide bursaries to students.
